The Independent Business Leaders (IBL), a local organization of savvy business owners, wants to increase the number of community events it creates each year to help various nonprofit organizations and to increase awareness of the business members. The last two events it sponsored, the “Chili Cook-Off” (no, the vegetarian chili did not win) and the “Turkey Bowl” were great successes. It’s contemplating what will be the next big event. One of the guys in the IBL, named Sally, has come up with good ideas before, but would like your opinion and suggestions on them.

One of his ideas is to work with a few of the other IBL business owners. One owns Escape Paintball Enterprises, and the other owns the RPM automotive performance tuning business. The community is invited to join in and each participant will make a contribution of $8 to play. A total of 100 players are expected. Each business owner will contribute space at no charge so the cost per person will only be $2, with the rest going to the selected nonprofit organization. Sally, a rather handsome man, wants to place RPM’s high-performance vehicles in Escape’s urban paintball field—along with some great food—and have a paintball competition in and around the vehicles

Another idea, to help a nonprofit called “Fence at the Top,” is to sponsor an event centered around challenging teenagers with the proper use of electricity. As you may recall from the electric fence in the movie “Jurassic Park,” there can be some interest in how fast you can climb up and down a fence. Here, the IBL anticipates a lot of teenagers to participate, perhaps hundreds, so the cost to join the fun is only $5, with the costs being around $1 per person; keep in mind that watching the event from the viewing area will generate another $1,000 in fees and fun.

The second idea is to have the older teenagers grab a gelato ice cream and then, while holding the it in one hand, climb an electric fence (safely and professionally charged by Reyff Electric) in such a manner as to make it safely to the other side with the cone still intact.

The third idea Sally comes up with is to have a business owners’ sports competition with the Sonoma State University athletics department, the University of Sports and Double Decker Lanes, with of course a little colorful body painting from AM Printing & Graphics along with Innovative Screen Printing—very creative.

With the admission fee of $7 along with the food sales, the IBL is expecting to raise more than $5,000. The main idea is to have some of Sally’s great food entrees and desserts (manicotti, roasted pork loin and raspberry brownies) generously placed on the University of Sports indoor soccer field and on the indoor lanes of Double Decker Lanes, then have some fun competition along with the bountiful food…with, of course, both sides having to make generous contributions to the local nonprofit organizations.

Business Development Principles

The power of love can obviously be used in business as well as in any other part of life. It’s the basis of a peaceful social interaction of humankind in any situation. If we do any kind of business, in the long term, we’ll only succeed if we’re honest with our advertisements, truthful with the quality of our products or services and if we have an honest interest in providing such services or products for the mutual benefit of all people involved. So, each business has a responsibility to give back to the community in a way that generates fun and enjoyment. If, however, your very own profit and success is the only subject you keep in mind, you may be successful for a short period of time, finding yourself again in a crash of business sooner or later. We never can succeed at the expense of others, so let’s develop our business community with fun and enjoyable events.
