2011 Best Office Technology Supplier Discovery Of

Discovery Office Systems has been voted Best Office Technology Supplier in the 2011 NorthBay biz readers poll.

“We won because of our staff,” says Dave McReynolds, general manager at Discovery Office Systems

(DOS). It’s the company’s fourth consecutive award as Best Office Technology Supplier. “They commit. If there is a problem, they own it until it’s solved.”

To illustrate the point, he describes the time when executives of a major prospect came to the Santa Rosa office to see a product demonstration. The dress code at DOS is usually business casual, he says, but after he explained the situation to his staff (the visitors had a much more formal company culture), they exceeded his expectations by arriving at work on the day in question wearing dresses and heels, suits and ties. “I can depend on them,” says McReynolds. “They always step up to the plate.”
McReynolds has a lot to be happy about. “Last year was a great year for us. We were up in sales 16 percent,” he says. “March was a rocket month. We had $1.2 million in sales, the best in the last three years. We closed out the fiscal year with a bang!” He’s predicting growth in excess of 20 percent for its next fiscal year, which started April 1.
With offices in Santa Rosa, Napa, Marin, Sacramento and as far north as Ukiah and Medford, Oregon, DOS has recently expanded its sales staff by four and support staff by three for a current total of 71. In addition to new staff at DOS, Kyocera (the primary technology manufacturer DOS represents) is adding to and upgrading its products.
“We’ll have a brand new product line from Kyocera by the end of May,” McReynolds says. “It will all be reengineered with cutting-edge technology.”
The company’s managed print service, Pagelogic, has really taken off. Developed here, it allows a systemized approach to managing printer fleet costs and utilization in offices with multiple printers.
“Kyocera liked it so much, it took [the service] nationwide and launched it throughout the United States and in Europe, Asia and Australia.… We monitor Kyocera national account MPS clients across the nation from here in Santa Rosa and dispatch supplies and service from a local servicing entity.”
In January, Kyocera introduced a new product line called SMARTtech. “It’s a bridge between a printer—which doesn’t do enough—and a multifunctional product (MFP), a copier with all the bells and whistles—which does too much.” SMARTtech is ideal for a location such as a medical office or a nurses’ station that needs a copier and scanner but doesn’t need all the complicated functions an MFP can do, McReynolds says.
He’s also excited about the company’s document analysis and management system, docSTAR, which lets offices file and track each document, reducing the number of times a document is touched and increasing office efficiency.
McReynolds says his is a dream job. “I’ve been with Discovery four years. Our object is to be a true partner with our customers, not just a vendor. We have the capacity with today’s technology to offer that to our clients. We can better their position and give them a competitive edge—and we’re local.”
