BEST Of 2014 People The Organic RoseSteve Rose

Steve Rose, chef/owner of Vineyards Inn restaurant in Kenwood, is all about living a green lifestyle—and sharing his inspiration for doing so with others. His new YouTube channel and website, The Organic Rose sets out to do just that. “We’ve been working on it for four years,” says Rose. “It started as just another cooking show, but it evolved. We decided we wanted to get our message out to the rest of the world. And organic living is great fun!”

Filmed and produced by Pacific Coast Multimedia, the short-format episodes are posted weekly and range from organic gardening, composting, cooking and farming practices. Rose visits local farmers to show viewers their stories close-up and illustrates gardening tips using his organic garden, called Rose Ranch (he also makes his own wine with his own certified biodynamic/organic grapes).

Future episodes will include sustainable fishing practices (he’ll head out on the boat with salmon fishermen who only do line catching, then head into the kitchen to show people how to cook it), cheese makers, water and energy conservation, solar power, cooking for pets, acupuncture, using natural products for skin and hair, and much, much more. Rose also plans a Spanish version to get the word out to more countries.

“The premise is you don’t have to be lucky enough to live in Sonoma County to live this way. You can do it anywhere,” says Rose. “There’s rooftop and windowsill gardening, urban composting and more.”

You can find Rose Ranch produce inside the restaurant and at farmers markets including the Glen Ellen Farmers Market, which is moving to Kenwood June 1. Rose and his wife, Colleen, opened Vineyards Inn in 1981. Regular events include a family-style Basque dinner (Rose’s heritage is Spanish Basque) on the second Thursday of each month, which includes seven courses and wine; Grandma Bev’s fried chicken dinners (with all the fixings and dessert) of the fourth Thursday of each month (“It’s not Spanish, but the chicken is so good!” says Rose); and open mic nights of the third Monday of each month. “Whoever wants to come share their talent is welcome,” says Rose. And thanks to Chef Steve for sharing his talents with us.
