It was a perfect fit. Asked what she enjoys most about her career, Smartt enthusiastically answers, “Everything! I love building relationships with clients and employees, making the perfect match between employee and employer, and helping to improve the working world for everyone.”
Are you more of a dog person or a cat person?
I’m a dog person. I have a miniature pinscher named Mr. Boogie that I rescued in 2009. He accompanies me to work when I’m strictly in the office. He’s a great companion!
What do you do to get yourself out of a bad mood?
Laughter is the best medicine for getting me out of a bad mood. A funny movie or a conversation with an upbeat friend does wonders for a dark mood. Brownies work, too.
Share a magical childhood moment.
When I was a sophomore in high school [Casa Grande in Petaluma], I was recognized as the highest all-time scorer in basketball—I still hold the record to this day. They made an announcement at half-time during a game and presented me with a basketball with my name on it and all the points I’d scored. When I was given the ball, I dedicated it to my grandpa and brought it to him in the stands. He used to tell everyone that story and how happy it made him feel. He was my biggest fan and I was able to perform so well because of the constant support he showered me with—and his loud cheers.
Did you ever have a nickname?
In high school, my grandpa would call me “Olive Oyl” at my basketball games, and it stuck with my teammates. He called me that because of my height and skinny legs (it’s from the cartoon “Popeye”). My grandpa thought it was an endearing name, but I was not a fan. Now I’d give anything to hear him say it. He passed away shortly after I graduated high school.
What do you love to do outside of work?
I am a huge basketball fan, specifically a die-hard Golden State Warriors fan. In my spare time, I like to attend the games, spend time with family and friends, take walks with my dog, read and work out.
What’s your favorite jellybean flavor?
I am not a big jellybean fan. My go-to candy is Hershey bars—I like to stick them in the freezer and eat them frozen…scrumptious!
What person do you admire most and why?
My mother taught me to be independent and work hard so that I would never have to depend on anyone in life. She also helped me learn practical skills to make my work efficient and always had a kind word when I felt discouraged. If I got stuck, she helped me think through options. My mother helped me to believe that, with hard work, dedication and the right knowledge, I could do anything.
What was your first job?
My first job was a sales associate at Claire’s Boutique at the Petaluma Outlets. I started there my senior year of high school and, because I had taken zero period, I was out of school by noon. I would work 1 to 5 p.m., then go to basketball practice from 5:30-7:30 then head home for dinner and homework (and repeat).
What would people be surprised to know about you?
Most people are surprised that I’m a tomboy at heart. I enjoy camping, playing sports, riding horses and dirt biking. I grew up with an older brother who I competed against frequently. I’m not afraid to get my hands dirty and I like to play hard!
If you could solve one unsolved crime or mystery, what would you want to know?
I’d love to know what Stonehenge was originally built for. There’s so much possibility and the structures are so beautiful.
