October 2014 People Hidden HeroesClaudette Shatt

When Claudette Shatto joined Napa Moms’ Club in 2012, she wanted to partner with the local community. Her idea was to approach the Napa County Family and Foster Care Association (napafoster.com) and work with Doris Gentry to organize a Halloween costume drive for foster kids.

“The first year was a success,” says Shatto. “We got about 75 costumes. I was thrilled!” The second year was even better. “It was an overwhelming response from the community,” she says. “We collected about 250 costumes as well as a bunch of accessories—shoes, face paint and even pumpkins. Every foster child in Napa had a costume, and extras were donated to the Napa Boys & Girls Club.”

This year, as in previous years, you can participate by donating new or gently used costumes, as well as any accessories, to the program. Simply place them in the bin located at 2412 Shoreline Drive in Napa, which is the home of Bill and Cathy Bickford. Costumes for kids up to age 18 are collected mid-September until a week before Halloween, when kids are invited to Bickford’s home to choose them. “It’s a great way for the community to connect,” says Shatto. “And we even get donations from outside the area from people who’ve heard about the drive. People from Fairfield, Solano County and even Texas donated last year.”

“Foster kids have often missed out on Halloween and other holiday events,” says Gentry. “For many foster kids, this is a new and exciting experience. For older teens, they need things to play with also, like wigs, make-up and overalls. All of these are great ideas.”

“People are really willing to open their hearts and willing to give to foster kids. I’m proud to be a part of it and proud of the community I live in,” says Shatto.

The Napa Moms’ Club provides a supportive community for families to share experiences, resources and friendship. For more information about the club or the drive, email napamomsclubinfo@gmail.com.
