December 2014 People Part Time Past 50

Looking for a new professional challenge? According to AARP, here are some rewarding part-time job opportunities for mature workers:

Accountant/financial manager. Duties include preparing financial reports, processing payroll checks, invoicing and tracking down delinquent accounts. Some firms will want you to monitor bank and credit card accounts or help prepare tax returns. A degree in accounting or business is helpful but not always required. Other beneficial skills include knowledge of accounting or business software such as QuickBooks and familiarity with Word and Excel.

Medical records transcriber/medical coder/billing. You don’t need a formal background in medicine; instead, computer proficiency, word processing skills and a fast Internet connection are key. Certification programs (advisable) include coursework in anatomy, medical terminology, legal issues relating to health care documentation, and English grammar and punctuation.

Recruiter. Use your well-developed network of industry contacts and your business instincts to analytically examine résumés and find qualified job candidates. There are no degree or certification requirements, but it’s crucial to be conversant in the field for which you’re recruiting.

Social media specialist. The majority of adults are using social media these days—Facebook, LinkedIn, Twitter, Instagram—and businesses of all sizes are realizing they need to join in to attract new customers. Expertise in tapping social networks and knowing how to use them is at the heart of this job.

Adult education teacher. English as a second Language (ESL), high school equivalency and adult education programs are all increasing the demand for qualified instructors. Most states require ESL and equivalency teachers to have a bachelor’s degree, and some also require a teaching certificate. But if you have a passion for teaching, this could be a fine opportunity to share your enthusiasm.
