Giving back to the community is exactly what John Ash & Co. had in mind when the restaurant and its Executive Chef, Tom Schmidt, were nominated as candidates in the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society’s (LLS) Man and Woman of the Year Fundraising Campaign. Schmidt was announced Man of the Year as himself and his team, Kick’n Cancer’s Ash, raised $131,009, which was the winning total among the candidates and the largest amount raised in the North Bay.“People are so generous. We received so many donations through auction items and the restaurant. It was amazing to see how much people love to donate to a great cause,” says Schmidt.
The team wanted to focus on a different campaign to raise money for. The restaurant’s general manager, Percy Brandon, is a board member for LLS and suggested directing the campaign toward this cause.
The campaign involves three men and three women who raise money over a 10-week period. The candidate who raises the most is declared Man or Woman of the Year. Schmidt and the team at John Ash & Co. prepared events and other fund-raising ideas for the campaign. For example, in restaurant’s Front Room lounge, a ‘Cosmo for a Cure’ could be ordered and 50 percent of the proceeds went to LLS. Donating $10 to the cause also entered participants in a drawing for an overnight stay at Vintners Inn.
A Gala Dinner with a live and silent auction raised more than $65,000.
“It was a good, positive event, especially for myself,” says Schmidt, “Not only was it emotional for me, but for my family as well.”
