2018 BEST Architectural Design Firm AXIA

“There is a certain responsibility coming with designing in our own back yard that keeps us on our toes and drives our commitment to deliver quality.”—Doug Hilberman, president

With almost eighty years of experience serving the North Bay, AXIA Architects is known for intelligent problem solving, thorough understanding of their clients and programs, and intimate connections with their sites. Living and working in the community they serve and having an energetic passion to find the right solution has resulted in many award-winning projects—a testimony to a sound design philosophy and proven methodologies.

“Almost all of our projects are in the five counties of the North Bay and North Coast,” says Doug Hilberman, president of AXIA Architects. “Our regional focus allows us to get to know the local leadership and regulatory agencies in a more intimate manner. It helps us to better align our clients’ visions with the local community visions. There is a certain responsibility coming with designing in our own back yard that keeps us on our toes and drives our commitment to deliver quality.”

AXIA’s portfolio of projects range from corporate to educational facilities such as the IDEX Corporate Facility, Enphase Energy’s International Headquarters, Wild Diamond Winery, the Piner Performing Arts Center and numerous private residences.

“We have continued to strengthen our staff and diversify our body of design work,” says Hilberman. “In 2017, we enjoyed designing a number of corporate facilities, educational facilities, wineries, hotels, master plans, use permits, and custom residences. We’re very fortunate to have a group of talented project architects and designers that can creatively support this diversity of client needs. It makes getting up each day a fresh and exciting adventure. We are currently working on a new middle school for the Roseland Charter School District. This comes on the heels of designing the Roseland School District Administration Building,” he says. Other recent projects by AXIA include Brookside Elementary School’s Multi-use building, a major remodel of a local financial institution’s headquarters, and an exciting sports and entertainment facility, the Epicenter. “We’re also working with some notable regional wineries exploring a more robust guest experience.”

After the October firestorm, AXIA has also prioritized supporting the community recovery. In addition to designing some new residences for families, they’ve been engaged in rebuild task forces, city and county planning groups, and design efforts for temporary housing solutions.

The staff at AXIA share a passion for their profession, and the collaborative work environment invites each member of the firm to contribute their special talents to a project. This contribution is complemented by the diverse expertise and specialized talents of the entire staff.

“In our minds, [being recognized for this award] is a reflection of our involvement in our community and our dedication to our craft,” says Hilberman. “With just under 80 years of roots in our community, the history of leaders in our firm include a former mayor, civic board chairs, community organization presidents, nonprofit board chairs, numerous volunteers, and coaches for our local youth. We are big believers in giving back and strengthening the community in which we live. Our passion is developing an architecture that allows our clients to perform better and enjoy their environment. I’d like to think that some of our key differentiators are our creative problem solving and our attention to our clients’ needs.”
