It’s autumn, it’s cold out, and all that makes you feel warm and cozy is the seasonal favorite—PSL, better known as a pumpkin spice latte. It was 12 years ago when Peter Dukes, the director of espresso for Starbucks, was asked to make a “pumpkin-y” latte to finish off their seasonal drink selection. It was originally names the “Fall Harvest Latte” before becoming today’s acronym. The latte turned phenomenon is anticipated all year. Here’s what you should know about the foamy favorite.

The most popular drink—ever. A reported 108,000 people follow the drink on twitter, awaiting its seasonal release date. It’s also Starbucks’ best-selling drink in history, with more than 200 million sold.

Got Pumpkin?

You may think pumpkins are only good for jack-o’-lanterns or pumpkin pie, but it may be time to rethink this plump, nutritious orange plant. Pumpkin is a highly nutrient-dense food. It’s rich in vitamins and minerals, but low in calories.

Pumpkin has a range of health benefits, including being one of the best-known sources of beta-carotene, a powerful antioxidant. It also gives orange vegetables and fruits their vibrant color. The body converts any ingested beta-carotene into vitamin A. Eating foods rich in beta-carotene may:

•    Reduce the risk of developing certain types of cancer

•    Offer protection against asthma and heart disease

•    Delay aging and body degeneration

•    Help prevent diabetes and heart disease

•    Promote a healthy complexion and hair

•    Increase energy

•    Maintain a healthy Body Mass Index (BMI)

Pumpkins are also a good source of fiber, and many studies have suggested that eating more plant foods decreases the risk of obesity.
