Snack Smarter on the Go

Whether you’re traveling by plane, train or automobile, take your health habits with you and eat smart on the go. If you plan ahead and have strategies in place, it will help you make good choices. Here are five tips from the Mayo Clinic.

Take snacks to go. Before the trip, pack portable nonperishable food in your backpack, purse or tote. Single-serving packets of peanut butter and whole-grain crackers, trail mix, nuts, low-fat granola bars and dried fruit travel well.

Load up the cooler. Traveling by car? Pack a cooler with skim milk, yogurt, string cheese, small packages of lean, sliced meat or poultry for sandwiches, fresh fruit and pre-cut veggies. Whole-grain bread and cereals round out meals and also work well as a quick snack.

Stay hydrated. Fill your reusable water bottle at home, or pack water in the cooler for road trips. Include slices of lemons or limes for vitamin C. Individually packaged 100-percent fruit juices, sparkling water, or unsweetened iced tea are also good choices.

Optimize resources. When you check into a hotel, ask employees or the concierge about local restaurants that feature healthy food on the menus, or that offer grilled or broiled foods. You might also ask if there’s a grocery store nearby where you can purchase fruit or easy-to-fix items.

Practice portion control. At business events, watch your portions. Splurge on small servings of some high-calorie foods so you don’t feel deprived, and eat larger portions of lower-calorie foods.

Eat for energy. Remember, eating healthy gives you the strength and energy you’ll need to fully enjoy your trip.

travel flings from spring to winter

Now that spring is here, it’s a good time to plan a getaway, or drop everything for some rest and relaxation. Here’s one destination for each remaining month of the year to help you find that perfect holiday.

June: Anchorage, Alaska
Though this destination isn’t thought of as a travel hot spot, Anchorage heats up in June—although just to about 60 degrees. More importantly, it’s the summer solstice on June 21, and Alaska’s largest city enjoys 18 hours of sunlight during the day to make the most of the celebration.

July: Bristol, Rhode Island
Celebrate the Nation’s birthday on the Fourth of July by attending America’s most senior Independence Day party. Dating back to 1785, the festival starts in June and runs through the holiday.

August: Maasai Mara, Kenya
Travel to Africa in early August and witness an annual migration of zebras, gazelles and wildebeests as they streak across the Serengeti in search of new sources of food. Grab a safe vantage point, however. Lions and other predators will be after the migrating plant eaters in search of their own meal.

September: Grand Canyon National Park, Arizona
The ever-popular Arizona park will be slightly less populated in September, and the weather more moderate. Find that perfect view from the top looking down or hike to the bottom of the Grand Canyon and enjoy temperatures in the 80s, as opposed to the triple digits.

October: Munich, Germany
Beer lovers in the North Bay can see how their counterparts in Europe celebrate their favorite brews during the Oktoberfest celebration in Munich, Germany—but pace yourself during this 16-day event.

November: Buenos Aires, Argentina
The weather is ideal in the bustling capital city in November. An addition to outdoor markets, the temperature is perfect for the Argentina Open Polo Championship and the lights of Puerto Madero.

December: Vienna, Austria
End the holiday season in one of the best places in the world to celebrate Christmas, Vienna, Austria. Holiday markets rich with choir music, mulled wine and roasted chestnuts can be enjoyed before watching “The Nutcracker” at the Vienna State Opera.
