McNears Beach Park, a popular County of Marin facility along San Pablo Bay in eastern San Rafael, will be closed from March 2 through March 10 as the parking lot is repaved. Additional striping work is expected to be completed by mid-March.
Marin County Parks originally paved the parking lot in the 1970s. The improvement project will include fresh asphalt and wider entries to both the main lot and overflow lot.
Project plans approved in June 2021 factored in upgrades to stormwater drainage, including Bioretention planters, irrigation systems, and new low-water plantings of shade trees and shrubs. The project contract was awarded August 10 to Bauman Landscape and Construction, Inc.
On March 1, the Marin County Board of Supervisors approved a contract amendment with Bauman for $79,516 to mitigate soft soil in isolated areas under the pavement and raised the contract to $763,199 from $683,683. Parks Measure A funds were used to secure $480,201 in grants from California Proposition 68, officially known as the California Parks and Water Bond Act of 2018.
Signage about the closure is posted at the park.
