The Marin County Free Library (MCFL) has special plans for the 25th anniversary of Día de los Niños/Día de los Libros, or Children’s Day/Book Day, on Saturday, April 30, and Sunday, May 1. Commonly known as Día, the event is designed to advocate for children’s literacy development and improve access to the world of books, libraries and reading.
MCFL will use its Learning Bus and Bookmobile as it partners with San Rafael Public Library, other County of Marin departments, and community partners to celebrate around the county. There will be musical performances, children’s book giveaways, snacks and games. Through the generous support of the Friends of the Marin County Free Library, Cascada de Flores will perform an interactive, original, and bilingual (Spanish/English) story with music and dance.
The local Dia schedule:
Marin City event: Noon, Saturday, April 30, at George “Rocky” Graham Park, 850 Drake Avenue. Marin County Department of Health and Human Services will offer COVID-19 vaccinations from 11:30 a.m. to 2 p.m.
San Rafael event: Noon, Saturday, April 30, at Pickleweed Park, 50 Canal Street, San Rafael
Point Reyes Station event: 10:30 a.m. Sunday, May 1, on the lawn area in front of Cowgirl Creamery, 80 4th Street.
“Everyone is welcome to participate in these free events, which will be fun for the whole family,” said Diana Lopez, MCFL Education Initiatives Coordinator and Branch Manager at the Marin City Library. “We will encourage visitors to share feedback about our library services as part of our community chat opportunities.”
Día is a nationally recognized literacy initiative endorsed by the Association for Library Service to Children (ALSC). ALSC calls Día “a daily and year-round commitment to literacy” through the world of words and learning, striving to nurture children’s cognitive and literary development in ways that honor and respect a child’s home language and culture.
The common goals of all Día celebrations are: to celebrate children and connect them to the world of learning through books, stories, and libraries; to introduce families to community resources that provide opportunities for learning through multiple literacies; and to celebrate, honor, and respect unique cultures, heritage, and languages as powerful tools for strengthening families and communities.
