Did you know that Women’s History Month has its origins in Sonoma County? Join the Sonoma County Library in celebrating and learning about the generations of women who influenced and enriched our nation and society. While Women’s History Month is in March, the library offers resources created by and about women that can be enjoyed all year long.

Local women created the Santa Rosa Women’s History Week parade in 1979, setting the stage for President Carter to issue a Presidential Proclamation in 1980 declaring the first-ever Women’s History Week in early March of that year. In 1987, Congress declared March as National Women’s History Month in perpetuity.

The National Women’s History Alliance designates a yearly theme for Women’s History Month. The 2023 theme is “Celebrating Women Who Tell Our Stories.”
