Overnight parking is coming to several Sonoma-Marin Area Rail Transit stations, the SMART board of directors decided this week.

The move is part of an effort to gain riders en route to the Sonoma County Airport or staying in San Francisco, said SMART officials. The rail agency’s board approved the parking plan unanimously at its April 19 meeting. The plan would allow $5 overnight parking to those who purchase train tickets.

The parking program will be available at six stations: Larkspur, Hamilton, San Marin, downtown Petaluma, Rohnert Park and Sonoma County Airport.

In other moves made at the meeting, the board voted to extend its temporary fare reductions to May 2024; it also extended the suspension of parking fees at station parking lots through June 2024.

Finally, the board also voted to launch a new pricing model for its 31-day fare—lowering it from $135 to $117 for adults; and from $67.50 to $58.50 for youth, seniors and disabled riders. The fare reduction will be offered from July 1 to June 30, 2024 and is intended to attract riders who may be working remotely part of the week and aren’t commuting as frequently as they did prior to the pandemic.
