Volunteers build more than 400 bikes for North Bay kids

A total of 11 nonprofits assisted in getting the newly built bikes to children around the North Bay.

While most banks were closed Oct. 9 for Indigenous People’s Day, Redwood Credit Union hosted its Day of Impact.

The North Bay-based credit union partnered this year with Specialized, one of the largest mountain bike manufacturers in the U.S., to build more than 400 bikes for the children in the North Bay. Nearly 850 team members from various RCU branches met Monday morning at the Sonoma County Event Center at the Sonoma County Fairgrounds to help build the bikes, according to an announcement from RCU.

The credit union paid its employees to participate in the event because Oct.9 was a federal holiday and most financial institutions were closed. The goal of the program, say RCU officials, is to foster the well-being of local youth, connect them with the outdoors and give them a means of transportation by building and distributing the bicycles. After the bikes were assembled by RCU employees, they were then delivered to the nonprofits by Trope Group.

The bikes will be distributed to kids through the program’s various nonprofit youth-serving partners; each child will also receive a helmet and lock for their new bikes. The 11 nonprofit partners include:
