Mill Valley voters will decide upon a proposed sales tax hike this Nov. 5.

The Mill Valley City Council officially endorsed the proposed increase at its Aug. 5 meeting. If it passes with a simple majority, the city’s current 8.25% sales tax would rise one percentage point, increasing its annual revenue to the city from $3.6 million to $4.2 million. Revenue from the tax supports city services, facilities maintenance and public safety; the council has specifically called for funds to go toward infrastructure improvements.

According to city staff, as much as $180 million in infrastructure updates could be needed over the next decade.

The city received positive polling on a 1% increase in March and in June approved placing the measure on the November ballot. The tax would need to either be renewed by voters in 10 years or allowed to expire.

According to the staff report, the facilities updates would include library upgrades, sidewalks, bike lanes, playgrounds and infrastructure improvements at civic buildings.
