The commute between Marin and Solano counties could see some light at the end of the traffic-jammed tunnel, as state transportation officials lobby for $73 million in funding to widen Highway 37. California Transportation Commission staff is recommending the project receive grant funds as part of the statewide $810.5 million Trade Corridor Enhancement Program.
The Highway 37 work would widen a 10-mile stretch from Sears Point to Mare Island—a thoroughfare that sees almost daily gridlock.
A major project to relieve bottlenecks and protect against flooding on Highway 37 could get a big funding boost.
The California Transportation Commission staff is recommending the project receive $73 million in Senate Bill 1 gas tax funds. The funding is part of a $810.5 million “Trade Corridor Enhancement Program” grant package being allocated across the state.
The three-phase Highway 37 project — which will widen a 10-mile stretch from Sears Point to Mare Island, among other improvements — is one of 24 projects recommended for funding. Highway 37 between Marin and Vallejo sees nearly 40,000 daily, according to the Marin Independent Journal. The highway is a hot topic among transportation watchdogs—as its situation abutting the San Pablo Bay will likely see it under water in the coming decades if expected sea-level rise comes to fruition.
The commission will consider grant allocations at the end of June.
