A small fire at Volo Chocolate in Windsor this weekend led to the bitter end of nearly 200 pounds of chocolate, according to the Sonoma County Fire District.

Fire responders were called to the chocolate company, located at 514 Business Park Court, a little after 6 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 17, in response to reports of smoke billowing from the building. Firefighters said the blaze was largely contained to a single chocolate machine—an induction burner—and no injuries were reported, according to the Santa Rosa Press Democrat.

Opened in 2016 by restaurant veterans Susan and Jeff Mall, Volo Chocolate’s sweets are based on Mexican flavors, featuring such options as a Mexi-Cali-infused chocolate with dried chiles and cherries and the new “El Pumpkin Spicy.”

“We look at chocolate as a food, not a candy,” Jeff Mall told NorthBay biz magazine recently.

While Volo hasn’t reported an estimate for the damages, the amount of chocolate lost in the blaze amounts to about a week’s worth of chocolate making, according to estimates on volochocolate.com.
