As the holiday giving season ramps up, local agencies and nonprofits are finding ways to make food donations as easy as possible during the busy months—going literally from porch to pantry.
Redwood Credit Union this month announced a partnership with nonprofit A Simple Gesture to expand a doorstep food collection program throughout the North Bay and San Francisco. The food drive, which runs now through Dec. 19, allows donors to give directly from their doorstep—just sign up online and program volunteers will pick up the shelf-stable food from donors’ homes for delivery to food banks and other pantries.

RCU describes it as “a powerful and convenient way to help ease the hardships caused by the [recent] government shutdown and the funding cuts to food banks and safety net services.”
Donated items will be delivered to program partners SF-Marin Food Bank, Redwood Empire Food Bank and Community Action of Napa Valley. Redwood Credit Union CEO Brett Martinez said the idea is to make it “easy for [the community] to engage and support.”
“This innovative porch-to-pantry food drive makes it simple and convenient for people to donate and know they’re making a difference,” said Martinez in announcing the program.

Porch-to-pantry pickups continue through Dec. 13; after that, donations can be made directly to the food banks. Register for a porch-to-pantry donation here.
