The Windsor Town Council is set to meet and discuss the resolution on July 19.

Parking in downtown Windsor may get a shakeup, as city officials consider a proposal to free up parking by placing time limits on spaces.

The resolution calls for the conversion of 119 parking spaces into free short-term parking. The Windsor Town Council is set to discuss the possible change at its regular public meeting on July 19. Proponents of the change say more short-term parking spots would increase turnover and free up more spaces.

Some local businesses are skeptical about the benefits of increased short-term parking. For those who work in the area, the long-term spots allow them to park close to work without having to worry about their vehicles.

If approved, the resolution would create 115 three-hour spaces and four 15-minute spaces, which can be utilized on quick trips to the downtown area. The free three-hour parking would be in the following blocks:

  • McClelland Drive between Market Street and Windsor Road
  • Windsor Road between Emily Rose Circle and Windsor River Road
  • DuVander Lane

According to an announcement of the meeting on the city’s website (townofwindsor.com), “A three-hour limit was chosen as it allows customers sufficient time to dine and shop while reducing the number of residents and employees parking in these premium spaces.”

The proposal was originally presented in the Downtown Windsor Parking Study adopted in January 2020.

The July 19 meeting begins at 6 p.m. in the council’s chambers, at 9291 Old Redwood Highway, Windsor. More info at townofwindsor.com.
