A proposed 130-unit housing development at the foot of the North Marin hills was green-lit by the Novato City Council this week.

The council voted 5-0 to approve the Valley Oaks North project, slated for a 38-acre site along Redwood Boulevard, north of San Marin Drive near the Buck Institute for Research on Aging.

In accordance with the city’s affordable housing requirements, eight of the homes will be for low-income households and 12 will be moderate-income homes. The remainder of the project, led by Sonoma County-based Campus Property Group LLC, will include 61 single-family residences (49 of which will have junior accessory units) and 20 townhomes.

The proposed plan includes neighborhood outdoor amenities including picnic tables, walking paths, a pedestrian bridge, bike racks, benches, bocce and outside exercise equipment.

The 130 new units will count toward a portion of the 2,423 housing units the City of Novato projects to be built under its 2023-2031 housing element.
