What’s the Issue?

What national issue matters most to you? That’s the question posed to voters as they left the polls on Election Day, and their answers, in large part, depended on which presidential candidate they favored.

It’s not surprising given the political divide in the United States, as evidenced by the incumbent, President Donald Trump, suffering defeat while earning the second-most votes in American history. The winner, former vice president Joe Biden, of course garnered the most votes in any presidential election.

But there’s possibly common ground to be found in the near future. For example, though Republicans and Democrats are divided on the economy and the pandemic, the two are inextricably linked. The economy is in a downturn due to COVID-19, and if it’s to rebound in a sustainable fashion, the pandemic must be harnessed.

Ultimately, however, which issues are tacked by the new administration may depend on other vote tallies. Two Senate runoff elections are set for January in Georgia, and they’ll determine if the Senate—the powerful assembly within the legislative branch of U.S. government—will be majority Democratic or Republican.
