A March mudslide that destroyed a frontage road by the Birkenstock building in north Novato will keep a section of Redwood Boulevard out of commission throughout the summer, Caltrans reported this week.

The storm on March 21 dislodged several tons of earth on a 100-foot stretch of Redwood, threatening utility lines and cutting off southern access to Olompali State Historic Park, which remains closed since the slide.

Reconstruction of the road isn’t expected to begin until June, according to Caltrans, with the work targeted for completion in September. The cost for the project is expected to near or top $10 million.

Redwood Boulevard remains closed between Buck Center Drive and San Antonio Road.

The mudslide also damaged some Pacific Gas & Electric Co. power poles; a pair of PG&E gas lines along the section avoided damage and service has continued uninterrupted for the 93,000 Marin residents served by those lines.
