Founded in 1974, ZFA Structural Engineers provides engineering solutions to help clients build high-quality communities and facilities in the North Bay and throughout Northern California. Established by Gregory Zucco, the firm is now led by Kevin Zucco, Greg’s son, and Mark Moore, who serve as executive principals in this 100 percent employee-owned company. Together, they are pleased to have won the title of Best Engineering Firm in the North Bay. “On behalf of everyone at ZFA, thank you to the readers and colleagues who voted for us,” says Kevin Zucco. “We are pleased to continue to be a part of our North Bay community and are very grateful for the honor of this acknowledgement.”

ZFA’s footprint in the North Bay is evident. A few of its notable projects include Santa Rosa Junior College’s Burbank Theater Renovation, Russian River Brewing Company’s Windsor brewpub and the restorations of Trefethen Winery and the Napa County Historic Courthouse.

As Northern California has developed in the last four decades, ZFA has expanded its service sectors to grow with it. The firm provides structural engineering services for a variety of project types, such as custom residential homes, schools, wineries, office buildings, civic centers, health-care institutions, as well as police and fire stations.

More than 75 employees occupy five fully-integrated offices in Santa Rosa, Napa, San Francisco, Silicon Valley and Sacramento. Angie Sommer, associate principal and chief marketing officer, attributes part of ZFA’s success to its employee-focused culture.

“Team comradery creates a trusting and collaborative environment that contributes to developing purposeful engineering solutions,” she says.

As a whole, ZFA prides itself on its ability to add comprehensive value to any project. “ZFA’s focus on the whole project—not just the structural engineering—is what makes us unique,” says Sommer, who names risk evaluation for a stock of hundreds of buildings and finding an opportunity to simplify an architectural layout by relocating structural framing as two examples of ways that ZFA has added value for its clients.

As the North Bay moves forward in an era of increasing natural disasters and a pandemic, among other, more global threats such as climate change, ZFA continues to focus on the future. “We understand the importance of contributing our knowledge and effort to help update our building codes and standards,” says Zucco. “And we continue to seek to be at the forefront of building technologies, incorporating elements such as offsite factory-built (modular) housing and cross-laminated timber (CLT) framing into our projects where appropriate.”

ZFA is not only thriving in the moment as the winner of this year’s Best Engineering Firm, it is well-positioned to make an impact on life in the North Bay and beyond for decades to come.
